this is a great pattern! i took a dress i made and turned it into a romper by sewing about a 1/2 inch of stiching in the middle! it’s such a great pattern!!!!!!
i like to use the drawstring pattern and make three and use one as a belt. and in the main picture do they use ribbon to tie the dress back in the middle??
oh’ and do you guys have an easy way to make a belt that looks like a belt? i need one or two to go with some outfits i’m making.
Use ribbon or thin elastic and tie it around the waist of your doll. It looks super good, exactly like the picture.

I bought a 25 year old sewing machine last week and am a man with no previous sewing experience apart from watching my mother many years ago! I downloaded this pattern and instructions and within 2 hours had a new dress for my daughters American Girl Doll. What a great project for learning some basic sewing skills! Than you so much for sharing this pattern.
Best Regards,
Richard

I love this! its gorgeous!!
My daughter downloaded this pattern last night and we have literally made about 6 of them. It’s a very simple pattern to follow, however I did not like the casing for the arms and straps so I opted to use double fold bias tape (a pack of it is less than $2 at Wal-Mart) and found that it works just fine, plus I can get about 2 dresses finished with each package. I also decided to make the dresses reversible so they can do double duty as two dresses in one. You basically cut out 2 dresses (2 fronts/2 backs) and stitch each dress together separately at the side seams and press the seams, then turn 1 dress inside out, and put it inside the other dress with the seams facing opposite each other to they will be encased inside the dress once you turn it right side out. Match the side seams and pin together at the bottom only and stitch both dresses together at the bottom all the way around. Press the seam open, and turn right side out. Press the seam again to make the dress flat, and on the outside of the dress stitch all the way around the dress again to complete the bottom of the dress. For the top front and back of the dress, press a small seam in ward on both sides (2 in front/2 in back, since you’re doubling the dress) and stitch a straight seam across to encase the seam you pressed. Then you attach the seam casing or double fold bias tape to the arm holes as the pattern directs (I added a 1 inch increase to the top of the pattern for the armhole), and then the seam casings as well. The reason for pressing top front and back seams first is so it will be less bulky due to the armhole casings, when you go to make the casings for the drawstrings. What you end up with is a reversible dress, or if you choose you can use a very thin linen even if you don’t want to make the dress reversible so the the inside will look completely finished and professional. With the adaptations that I’ve just described here, I really only need 1 pattern piece, which is the front/back one.
Melissa, how do you do the casing for the bias tape that you tie at the shoulders then, without the “inside” fabric showing on the “outside” or visa versa. I would make each side different, so I don’t see above how that part works… ? Can you help me? thanks!
The download worked fine but I also just followed the alternative link.
A lovely pattern. Thank you.
I’ll have to make some changes since I will be making the dress for a bigger doll but the pattern looks easy enough where it should not be a proplem.
Is this easy to sew by hand?
